This morning I slept in. The delicious sleep that follows 180 days of school, knowing that today, finally! there is nothing to rise for. The sleep that when you wake and check the clock, you decide that there is 30 more minutes of sleep that you can have, just for the asking. It turns into an hour. I remember hearing the rain pitter-pattering outside of my window.
I rose and wandered downstairs, following the blink-clink of hand-held video games. I found two boys playing nicely, they hardly noticed me, their bellies full of donuts that their daddy had bought, just for today. Good thing. There's none left, save two that I sneak later with my coffee.
I stumbled over to the coffee pot, no longer able to resist the aroma. No matter that it was made hours ago, it is still hot and steamy, perfect with sugar and cream.
I checked my email, my feed reader, my facebook, my stats. Twitter? I can't remember. Did I check that too? I had a second cup, and a third, wandering with my laptop to all of my favorite places to sit. I found a post or two that I shared, that I stumbled.
I fed the children.
I folded some laundry, and washed some, then dried some. Then folded more.
I scrubbed a couple of bathrooms. I showered, even.
Around 3 I decided to look and see if we had anything to make for dinner and came up with red beans and rice, with (shhh, turkey) sausage and shredded chicken. Homemade sweet cornbread that rivals any that Marie Calendar has ever made.
I never saw the outside of my house today, but that's ok. It was raining on the first day of summer break.

Ahhhh, I'm so jealous of your not leaving the house and of the words SUMMER BREAK. You enjoy the break with the kids and I'll just sit here at my desk and daydreaming the what if's of having a SUMMER BREAK!
Is it too late to go back to school to become a teacher? I could totally use a SUMMER BREAK. :)
Isn't summer break WONDERFUL! I think best thing of all was you waking up to two boys playing QUIETLY as well as nicely. That is such a wonderful gift they gave you (without even knowing)! Soak it all in; we both know it won't last for too long. :)
PS.. What ever happened with the teacher and note situation? Did you speak to her?
I can almost hear the "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" as you rolled over after looking at that clock!
The first day of summer break is the best!!!
Enjoy, sounds like the perfect day.
Oh YAY! I feel so special now that I can comment again!
Blogger hates me.
But watch me LEAVE A COMMENT. (Take that Blogger.... we can change settings!)
Welcome to summer! The day you described sounds simply lovely.
