Randomness for the First Week of August

The first day of school went well. #1 was so excited about it! He found out that he had more friends in his classes than he was aware of-Score! The most exciting news of the day though is that he was chosen to be in the 8th grade Symphonic band, rather than the general 7th grade band. One of only about 10 7th graders to make it out of 70 or so in the Symphonic band. Very cool! I believe that there will be lots of band concerts in my future. He is also going to try out for the jazz band to play piano. Kid is getting his music on, fo'sho'.

#2 was a little more apprehensive. I made the mistake of telling him that I had requested a certain teacher, (duh,) and when schedules came out he didn't get that teacher. The teacher that he got is a good one, but it wasn't the one that we both wanted so he was bummed out. He found out, though, that most of his friends are in his class which saves me the headache of fighting with the office to get him in the class that I'd like for him to have. (They make it most difficult to switch and I won't get into it here. Needless to say, PITA, with little to no chance of the child actually changing classes.) He had homework last night. Welcome to 5th grade!

My baby girl got home from her trip to Malawi a couple of weeks ago. We've been so excited to spend more time with her. She's been around home more often, for reasons that are hers and I won't talk about here, but it's been really nice. Her brothers are OVER THE MOON that they are getting to hang with her more often. She has a great job on campus; she is working almost full time right now and will be able to continue through the school year. She even got a promotion/new title/raise last week, complete with new business cards and an actual office with a window. She will be done with classes this semester and will have a BA in Biblical Studies and her Pastor's License. The fact that I have a child who is graduating college? MIND BLOWN. With a little encouragement from you guys, we may just get her to write a post for me about Water Wells For Africa, the organization that she goes to Malawi with. Who wants to hear more?? Let her know in the comments!

Have I mentioned here that I took a position on the football board? I am the Executive Assistant, low man on the totem pole, so to speak. (Which is fine, btw.) I'm the typer, emailer, Facebooker, and general, all around helper. I'm good at that, yo. What it's doing for me, though, is making me sick of football already. I have to be at the field every day to answer parents' questions, help kids with equipment, help the paperwork girl with her stuff. I'd really like a day to just walk during practice and get some exercise, or be able to send my husband so I can stay home and cook or drink or clean or drink or read blogs or drink.... You get the picture. I hear it slows down within the next week or so, so I'm ok with it, I'm just ready for next week to be here.

Actually, I'm ready for next week for a reason other than football. Have you seen the weather for Southern California? For the remainder of the week it will be 107, with humidity building through the week to "Steamy" on Friday. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I HATE THE HEAT. Couple my, um, internal furnace, with 100+ temps, and I am one miserable girl. I haven't turned the AC off in about a week now. That bill could put is in the poor house.

So that's the update for us. What have you been up to?

When you get old, and your teaching job ends 'cause the school closed, you nearly forget all about back to school days!

Of course, up here in Wisconsin, they don't go back to school until Labor Day.

Great news on the Symphonic Band for #1. Sorry about #2's teacher but sounds like it worked out okay after all. Glad HG made it home safely. Growing up so fast. See you in a few weeks!
