The Best Laid Plans

So.

Remember a couple of days ago when I said that we were going out tonight?

HA!

That will teach me to hire a babysitter.

Yesterday afternoon Headless Dad came home from work a little early and since it had rained here all day he couldn't work on the garden. (I'm not sure we'll ever get it planted this year!) So instead he laid down on the couch for a rest. (I'll insert here that I was mighty peeved. I had plans! I had chores to get done! Why won't you answer me when I ask you what you want for dinner! But yet I said nothing- he had a long week, early mornings, stressful days, and a co-worker lost his mother this week so HD's work load went up. He was actually due for a little rest.)

His phone rang at about 4:30.

Not a good sign.

When HD's phone rings that late on a Friday afternoon it usually only means one thing.

Well, after about an hour on the phone he had to leave. One of his biggest accounts was 'down' and he had to go figure out how to fix it. Not, however, until after one of his key 'fixers' ignored his call. Not a great way to start an emergency. Especially when you have to get on the busiest freeway around. On a Friday of a holiday weekend.

He called almost 2 hours later to say hello and fill me in on what was going on. And to tell me he was still about only 20 miles away. Holiday traffic. Ya gotta love it. I think he said that he was making something like $30 a mile. I had watched an entire movie with the kids and he was a lousy 20 miles away.

Anyway, at about 11 pm he called to say that he wouldn't be home until maybe mid-to-late morning (Saturday).

I actually enjoyed my evening. After the movie I got the kids to bed, finished my blog reading, gathered my book, bible, and magazine and headed upstairs. I changed into my least sexy flannels, turned on ESPN, and lounged in my own bed. It was bliss. (This is where I insert that most evenings HD is in bed way before me and I never get to just lay in bed and read before I go to sleep. That is one of my favorite ways to wind down, and it just isn't the same on the couch, now is it?)

This morning started like many others. If your mornings begin like mine with screaming children.

My first day to actually sleep later than 7 in God-knows-how-long and my children are screaming at 6:45.

So that means so was I.

Mother of the year, I tell you.

I got them quieted down for another hour of sleep and then HD called again. Another status call to say that they were able to fix some of the problem but not all, and they still had to find the rest of the problem. They would probably be home around noon.

"Should I call and cancel dinner plans?"

"Not yet. I really think I'll be home by noon."

See? I told you. The best laid plans.

2 hours later I was on the phone canceling the babysitter and dinner plans.

HD finally got home around 5:30; we ate, he showered, and went to bed. And here I am blogging and waiting on a load of laundry to be dry. Not perched in my bed with ESPN and a magazine.

*sigh* The best laid plans.

"HD finally got home around 5:30; we ate, he showered, and went to bed."

That's got to be one of the most depressing sentences I've read in a long time.

Sorry. That's about all I've got. :(

Oh how sweet of Dad to leave a message. :) Especially when he's tired.

I hear ya on the late Friday afternoon calls. And since Hubby's the ONLY one of him...no one to ask to help out...EVER...he heads off to fix whatever is wrong, where ever, and gets home when ever too.

Sometimes I wish I could hide his phone...oh wouldn't that be nice. And you know, I too forget...thats what helps me be able to stay home. SIGH. Can't say I enjoy sitting without him ever, but I do enjoy being able to stay home.

Feelin your pain,
Steph

PS...I've had to cancel "many a plan" myself...so you're once again, NOT ALONE. :(

Steph- Dad above is really my dad! HD is gone, and really? he wouldn't know how to leave a comment. If/when he wants to read this I have to get on for him.

It seems like it happens ONLY when we have plans, or when we have out-of-town company. Oh well! You're right-it does allow me to stay at home so I really don't complain too often!

Sorry about these plans going awry.

If its any consolation, it was our anniversary yesterday (33 - - - tyvm) and I had to spend it going to three open houses and then graduation itself. So - - - we didn't get to celebrate by eating out either. We're going to try to make up for it later - - - -

Love your blog - thanks for checking out mine. I know exactly what you mean about laying in bed and reading. My hubby goes to bed early and I hate it. I love reading in bed. Hope you get a date night soon.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, we didn't end up going Sat night :) Little dudette had a fever so I didn't want to stick her w/ my parents. We went last night and the Chilean Sea Bass was to die for - you definitely have a rain check. But my lovely morning alone w/ my hubby went awry with an earlier morning call from HD... And he's off to work! :)

I'm out to the garage to work out and enjoy some time on my own before I pick her up.

Yes, Kathy, a rain check is definitely in order!

Glad HD could spread the over-time-love!
