A Question of Food

Natalie said...

what is your favorite food? or maybe a food that you couldn't live without! i want to know all about it. who cooks it...how you eat it...what you are thinking while you eat it. spill it.

Ok, Natalie. This one is really hard. I have lots of favorite foods-by different people, for different reasons. I guess I'll give you a bullet list of some of the foods that come to mind:
  • I guess my all time favorite meal would have to be my Granny's Chicken & Dumplin's. She lived in Memphis when I was growing up and we would visit 2-3 times a year and this is a meal that she would always make for us. Many of us have tried to duplicate her recipe, but to no avail. She also would have filled "the pig" with her homemade oatmeal cookies and that is the first thing that we would reach for upon entering the house.
  • My MawMaw (Dad's mom) used to make the most amazing banana pudding, with Nilla Wafers and fresh bananas. I've been craving it lately so I'll probably attempt to make it soon.
  • My favorite snack food evah is tortilla chips with guacamole/salsa/queso dip. I'm dangerous if you put it in front of me. Watch your fingers. Even better with a cold beer on a hot summer day.
  • I'll always remember Sundays growing up because that was the day that my dad would cook. Bacon, eggs, and either waffles or pancakes. I've learned that not all breakfast meals are created equal, and no one makes breakfast like my dad. Funny story, though: When I was little our stove was on a peninsula in the kitchen and on Sundays I would stand on a chair to "help" daddy cook. I must have been 3 or 4 years old. One day the chair slipped (?) and I fell-putting my entire left forearm and hand into the hot bacon grease. The story goes that my mom put my arm under cold running water fast enough to help, but I still had blisters all over. A week or so later, after my mom had kept me inside-preventing me from popping any of the blisters-I 'escaped' out the front door, promptly tripping and popping the last of the blisters. I only have a small scar to prove it.
  • The foods that my mom cooked that I loved are: meatloaf, spaghetti, chicken divan (or 'chicken couch' as my dad would say!), and probably more, but that is what comes to mind right now. Luckily I have all of her recipes for these and they are in my regular rotation now, and my kids, in general, love them too.
So, Natalie, I hope I answered your question! My mouth waters reading Natalie's blog sometimes. She is currently living in Turkey and she talks about the great food that they eat. They are moving back to the states soon so go on over and pick through her archives a little-you won't be sorry!

I'll be back to answer more of your questions another day!

chicken couch....LOL....my mom calls a couch a divan...until now she was the only one (besides her mom) that I knew that said that! Was your dad from the midwest? Or is divan just a generational thing?

I can't find my blog said...

No, both of my parents are from Memphis. Could be generational, though.

yum! people tease me all the time about asking about food. it's an obsession really. i always want to know what people eat! every time i talk to my parents on the phone i ask them what's for dinner even though i can't even eat it!

I remember Dad cooking on the charcoal grill out in our backyard in Cali when we were little. Was doing something recently and that memory just popped into my head.

That memory is usually followed by the memory of taking baby sips off beers while everyone watched the bowl games on New Year's Day. :)

She learned that from Maw Maw Hill. she always had a dish of Banana pudding on the stove sitting over the pilot light to keep it warm.
For Sam, we cooked a lot of Country style ribs with Mike and Marlyn and Patty and Gary and all the kids !!
Even put the grill together in the dining room with Mike--
