I'm Having a Party. Won't You Come?

Auds at Barking Mad is hosting a virtual dinner party. Each participant is supposed to invite 10 bloggers so we can all meet new and wonderful people in Blogoslovakia. Welcome to my party!

I'm going to try to go off of the beaten path today and invite some people that I met at BlogHer that I had (mostly) never read before. These people are fascinating, talented, intriguing, funny, and more. Pull up a chair, grab a glass of wine, and make your self at home! (To my old pals: don't hate me! I really couldn't only invite 10 of you, could I?)

First I would like to extend an invitation to Sarah from Dopp Juice. She was on a great panel at BlogHer that discussed coming clean to your readers about BIG issues in your life, some that you don't necessarily discuss with people in your real life. I was blown away by her maturity (she's only 25!) and her poise. I was lucky enough to get to meet her on Saturday evening and have a great chat. Read her writing and you'll see what I mean.

After talking with Sarah on Saturday I got to meet Genie of In a Bottle. She's a newlywed-she and her husband are still trying to get in to their new house. Won't you go give them some luv?

I can't forget my new AllMediocre pal Andrea from The Sweet Life. She is as cute as her name. And if you thought that you had interesting thoughts about the Olympics, just read this.

Also, Kellan from On The Upside. We really bonded over our kids of similar age and our frequent trips outside to enjoy the refreshing San Fransisco breeze. ;-) And not only that, she just had her bloggoversary!

I also ran into Erika several times over the weekend. She writes at bipolarlawyercook and covers it all! I enjoyed getting to laugh with her over the craziness that was around us sometimes. She writes about her own brand of craziness with such grace and open-ness-very refreshing!

I enjoyed a great dinner with Jennifer (and a bunch of others) on Friday night. She blogs about Green parenting and going non-toxic in your homes at The Smart Mama. Lots of great info there, friends, and she does her homework and will call you on it. She's also a lawyer and her husband is a crash-test dummy. I'm not lying!!

I can't leave out Amie from Mamaloves. Anyone who puts "I peed on myself...and immediately went home to blog it" on their business card definitely deserves a place at this table. She's having a rough go right now-go give her some luv!

Next I'd invite Leslie-her three sites make me feel undereducated, but she never did. An amazingly smart woman with a passion for the education of our children, we had a great talk on Thursday night. She also writes for BlogHer in the Research, Academia, and Education. Yikes!

I'd also invite and Missy. She is so young and has such great energy, and certainly gets the award for Longest Flight-she came all the way from Australia!

Finally, I would extend a special invitation to Jenn of Mommy Needs Coffee. It is hard to express what she means to me. We have some things in common-we're moms, we have teens and elementary school kids, but the bonding went way beyond that. I would never have thought a 'rock star' blogger and I would hang out like we did, but we did. And I could have talked to her all weekend. She is funny and sensitive and open and...I don't know. We just clicked. Thanks, Jenn, for a great first BlogHer experience!

Headless Dad has decided that we will serve Chateaubriand, with Bernaise, potatoes, and asparagus. (Sorry if you're a vegetarian-I'll be sure to have salad and other stuff on hand, but you'll be missing out. He's a fantastic cook!) So while you're waiting on each course, grab a glass of wine and check out these great blogs over the long weekend, let them know you were there, then come back here and tell me what you thought!

*****
Thanks for hanging out for my party. Now I'm going to go party the weekend away with my husband's company on a 3 day cruise to Mexico for their 50th anniversary.

That is after we take Headless Girl to move into her dorm. Don't start! I'm not ready to talk about it yet. Hopefully I will have some great pictures to share, and a post that won't render me sobbing in the corner about MAH BABEE. A mom just has to be ready to talk about these things.

Wait! Come Back!

I'm out for the next couple of days preparing some things for next week. You are going to LOVE the artists that I have lined up for these giveaways. Make sure you visit next week to see their stuff and maybe WIN!

Also if you haven't gone over to AllMediocre to enter those giveaways-GO NOW!! Today is the last day and you don't want to miss a thing! And while you're there check out some of the great bloggers listed. There is a blog for everyone!

I'm also trying to prepare for our next vacation, next Friday and dinner guests tonight. Last night I took the kids to a birthday party that was supposed to last a couple of hours and we ended up staying 4+. It was fun, and I scored a bottle of the best wine-private label. I don't even want to open it because they don't sell it. What do you do with that situation? Stalk them so they give you more? Beg? Break in their house?

I am tired. When does school start again?

Pimpin For My Peeps

Hang out at AllMediocre this week and you'll get some great stuff, and find some great blogs in the process. Yesterday was a Shell gas card (it's open until next Monday,) and today is Art House DVD and art supplies. Click on the AM Blog tab at the top of the page every day this week.

Yesterday, Kelly had a Mr. Linky about your favorite products- Word of Mouth Monday. Check out some great non-paid shout-outs from everyday people like you and me. I promise to participate in the future- I just have the worst BlogHer fog. Does anyone know how to get rid of it?

And finally, next week is the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival. I've got a few things lined up so I'm sure it will be a great week. See you around Blogoslovakia!

Why I'm going to BlogHer

I've been reading a lot lately about going to BlogHer, or not going to BlogHer. That is the question.

Ha! My degree at work, y'all!

Anyway, I thought that I would weigh in on the issue at hand. There is a bunch of articles/posts that I could link to, and all would be worthwhile reads, but I've had a couple glasses of wine and that would be too much work.

*Ahem*

About a year ago I was a newbie to reading blogs and all of a sudden they started talking about this THING in Chicago, a bunch of women bloggers getting together to talk about all things BLOG. I wasn't even a blogger yet and I envied the fact that they could go to a really cool city, hang out with other moms, have a drink or two, and maybe learn a few things in the process. I truly envied these women getting to get out of the house for a few days, (those that took their kids I was worried about. JK!)

When I started blogging and getting comments I was really jealous (in a good way), because I see this conference as a way to build the community. We all blog with our own voice and with our own experience, but as women the building of community is what we're good at. We were made by God to be communicators, nurturers. (I won't get into the biblical aspect here or now, this one is about BlogHer, not my religious beliefs.)

Whether you're a political-mommy blogger, artsy-mommy blogger, childless-mommy blogger, or any of the other thousands of titles that someone has given us, isn't it about community? We all seem to love to write, love to have our voices heard. All of us love comments-it validates what we have written, it proves that someone is listening.

I'm going to BlogHer to widen my community.

I don't presume to have all the answers. Lord knows I don't have the traffic. But I have found a community that I wish to belong to. I contribute to that community, and I'm going to San Fransisco to learn more about that community. I want to learn how to be a better writer, better blogger, better community member.

Some have started the talk of the 'cool kids' and thinking that they will feel left out, or not even going because they don't want to have that feeling. Ya know what? I'm so far from caring.

Well, let me clarify.

Sure, it would be nice to know that some of the bigger bloggers know who I am. Sure, I would love to hear, "Headless Mom? I love your blog!" But really? I've only been at this about 8 months and unless they've noticed my name (it is kinda 'noticable', don't you think?) they probably haven't read my blog. I get that. I don't care that 'they' haven't read my blog. I care that YOU read my blog. I care that YOU like what I write. I care that YOU comment. I love getting new readers, I won't lie. I look at my stats. But I'm fooling myself if I think that Guy Kawasaki is going to come calling. I write one of the eleventy-billion blogs written by women, and I just want to be better at what I do.

Plain and simple.

I'm not knocking the big bloggers, don't get me wrong. When people have been a part of a community for a long time they have established friendships. That's how it should be and I don't expect to be a part of that immediately, or at all, and not in the 'if they don't want to be friends with me then screw them" kind of way. I can't wait to meet my friends-a couple of them are 'big', a couple of them are AllMediocre, and others are just like me. Women (and a dad or two), just trying to make connections in this big world of ours.

My New Pals Are So Mediocre

You may have noticed... Over there in the left sidebar... down towards the bottom...

AllMediocre is a new web group, loosely based on Alltop. For those of you that are still scratching your heads, it's ok. Basically Alltop is the best of bloggers in all categories... AllMediocre is for those of us that are next in line for blogging greatness (or at least that is what I'm telling myself today.) Meghan of AMomTwoBoys has worked really hard to get this up and running, and considering my level of blogging expertise I would have been rocking in a corner long ago twirling my hair mumbling something to the little green men. Ahem. And really? Anyone who can come up with this and actually accomplish it with two boys around is my hero- I can't even finish the laundry.

So, your assignment today is to click on over (either on the photo or on a link above) and go check out my new pals. I'm still working my way through the list but there are some great people there, and many that I can't wait to go back and stalk a little. And, if you feel led to leave them a comment (hint- bloggers love comments if you haven't noticed!) let them know that you found them through AllMediocre and me!

Go! Now!
