Getting Ahead of the Holiday Crunch

The holidays are upon us, whether we like it or not. Like you, it seems to surprise me every year despite the fact that I absolutely LIVE by my calendar. When the kids were little I was busier with the little things and had to micro manage their lives. Now that they are older I've had the luxury of getting ahead on some things better. Mind you, I'm SO not perfect on these things, but there are a few that I have a grasp on. Here's my list of things that are easily taken care of ahead of time- whether you're hosting a crowd or traveling, or both!

Things you can do well in advance of holidays:

  • Do your Costco run early-buy all of your toilet paper, paper towels, canned goods, extra butter, etc. at this time. Also buy a few things to keep in your freezer for those "Oh crap, I forgot about dinner" nights: lasagne, pot pies, etc. If you have to go back for fresh meat or perishables it will only be a few items and the trip will go much faster than trying to get it all done during the last minute rush, when you also have a house full of people that you would rather spend time with instead of standing in an hour long line to check out.
  • Shop online for gifts and have them sent to your destination. You can usually add "Attention: Your Name" somewhere on the mailing label so that the resident of your destination will know to put your things aside rather than opening them and spoiling the surprise. Do it early, save the emailed receipt in a special folder in your email so that you can make sure each one arrives before you do. Do this as soon as you finalize your gift list so you don't forget something or have to figure out how to travel with an odd-shaped gift or have to pay double shipping to get it to where you need to go.
  • Do a deep cleaning of your house early. Lift the pictures and tchotchkes when you dust so when you are putting out your holiday decorations that you don't find surprises! This helps because you can do a quick swipe/vacuum just before company arrives rather than realize at the last minute that you can't remember the last time you scrubbed the toilet. I speak from experience here. Ahem.
  • Shop NOW for special items for holiday parties or performances. I used to get so frazzled when a teacher would send home a letter about the kids needing a white shirt, or black pants, or whatever, for the holiday concert. I try to shop early for those items that I know that they (or I,) will need so that they can be washed, ironed, and set aside for the special day. This also eliminates the inevitable "OMG HOW CAN THEY BE OUT OF THIS!" moment when you have to run all over hell's half acre looking for a size/item that you have to have.
  • Wash/iron your linens early. Do you take pride in setting a gorgeous table? It's so much easier to do it when you already have them laundered and ready. Take an evening to catch up on Grey's Anatomy and iron while you watch, then hang in a closet.
  • Don't forget to take stock of what you have on hand before you make your shopping list. Do you always have mimosas on a holiday morning? Do you keep champagne and orange juice on hand always? Or do you need to grab some? What about the butter? Holidays always require extra so buy it now and toss it in your freezer. It won't go bad and you'll have extra when Aunt Carol forgets it for her super special secret recipe. You can freeze fresh cranberries too! Remember to look at the full list of food/meals to be served and grab what you can early.
  • Order holiday cards NOW. It's easy to address envelopes, write a letter, and stamp them later. It seems that choosing the photos and designing the cards takes way longer than anything else, and if you're behind on that they may never get sent. If you have little ones they can help with the stamps, folding letters, and stuffing envelopes, too.
What have I forgotten? What do you do early to avoid the crunch?

Progress, Y'all!

Just yesterday I was lamenting the state of my house. While there are 3 areas in serious need of attention, (I literally piled the decorations onto the existing crap. Don't judge.) I made progress in a few areas today!

First and foremost, I bought a new Christmas tree. I scored, bigtime. A few weeks ago I had checked Hobby Lobby to see what they had. At the time, the tree that I wanted was 40% off. Thinking that I would check a few more places, I didn't buy it. I checked online yesterday and noticed that their Christmas stuff was now 50% off. Score!

This morning I headed out pretty early. Well, for me anyway. I thought that I was only going to grab the tree. Heh. I grabbed the tag for the tree and a few, ok several, other things and went to check out. Turns out, the tree I had chosen was sold out. Except for the floor model. (Seriously? Mark it or take the tags out of the holder.) Since it had been out and picked over I only told them that I would take it if they gave me more of a discount. They did! I ended up getting a $600 tree for about $250. Love that! And, it's 9 feet tall-perfect for our living room with a vaulted ceiling.

The best part of the tree though was when HD went to pick it up. He called me after almost having a heart attack at seeing the price on the box. He was not happy. Then he saw the receipt. And praised my bargain shopping and negotiating skills. ;-)

I also put away several boxes. Getting there!

I also got more Christmas shopping done! Yippee!!!!! I'm feeling pretty on top of things so far this holiday. Don't hate me. I'm certain it won't last for the next 4 weeks so I'll enjoy it now, mmmmkay?

The Storm before the Calm

I'm sitting here tonight and my house is in chaos.

I pulled out all of the Christmas decorations today, and while it's starting to look festive, the mess still remains. Boxes stacked to go back into the closet, boxes open waiting to be emptied. Boxes stacked waiting for a tree to trim. Stockings hung, nativities staged, mini-tree plugged in and trimmed.

There are still a few things left to do. (Besides that tree. The tree still needs to be bought and put up!) How is it that I cleaned last week but am still cleaning as I go. And will still need to sweep and vacuum when I'm done tomorrow? *sigh* The work is never done, I suppose.

The best part about the chaos now, though, is that in a day or two I will be done with the decorating and can get on to the fun part-the shopping and cooking! I do love decorating though. Most everything that I have for decorating are things that I LOVE. There are so many things that make me smile- you can see some of them on this post from 2008!

I know, I know. It's not even Thanksgiving yet. If you knew my December schedule, you would understand. I'm glad I'm getting it done now. I will have so much less stress over the next couple of weeks, and have a pretty and clean house to enjoy the Christmas season in. After traveling for the last few years over the Christmas holiday it will be a joy to be at home this year.

Although, I will miss the snow!

Gift Giving 101

Melissa from Rock and Drool wrote a great post of blog topics and I've been kicked into action. (Thanks Liz!) Check out the list, get over your blogstipation, and get writing, already! Yes, I know it's the holidays but there is more than one idea that will only take a few minutes to write and publish. Get moving! I'm using #96 but giving it my own twist!

*****

I've always prided myself on being a pretty good gift-giver. Yes, some people are super hard to buy for but that doesn't mean that you can't do a good job of finding something great to give them. Here is a list of ideas for great gifts and thoughts on how to find the perfect gift.

  • What is this person's hobby/passion? This is kind of a no brainer, but does your friend/family member love golf? Fishing? Knitting? Music? Sports? Wine?
  • The easy answer here is a gift card to a store that supports that hobby, and that is a great place to start but not the only place.
  • You could go for the experience... A round of golf at a local favorite course, or a 'dream course,' a boat rental for a day on the lake, a specialty class, tickets for a concert, tickets for a college or professional sport, a day of wine tasting.
  • Go small: find little things that pertain to that person's passion: a bracelet, a book, a pen/pencil/pad with a logo on it, a coffee mug, key chain, license plate frame, tshirt, etc..
  • Do you have a shared history? Think 'Memory Gift.' There are dozens of things that you can get with pictures: mugs, iPad or Kindle covers, phone cases, Christmas ornaments, photo books, throw blankets, key chains, you get the idea.
  • Get a journal and make the first entry a letter to that person about why they are so important to you.
  • A trip to the restaurant/museum/place that means the most to your shared memories. Bonus if you can do it together!
  • Many destinations now have online gift shops which make it easy to get something from that location--think Grand Canyon, Hawaii locations, ski lodges..... Where did you say you met your spouse?
  • Add to their collection. Most people have a collection of some sort. It can be an easy gift if you always keep your eye out for a unique addition to that collection!
  • Something useful is good, but make sure they need/want it. For example, if someone is asking for a new vacuum-GREAT! then get it. If they haven't asked for it, it wouldn't be cool.
Some solid suggestions and ideas that I've used/been given:
  •  A hand-carved, collapsible basket/trivet to add to my mom's heart collection. She had never seen one before, (nor had I,) so it was an obvious choice!
  • A set of high ball glasses with a cassette tape on the side with a wax pen to write the name of your 'Mix Tape'. This was for my brother who used to sit in his room for hours making his own mix tapes on a tape to tape machine in the 80's.
  • A wine glass with 'shoes' hand painted on it for a friend that has a shoe obsession.
  • A bag of Hershey's kisses with the tags replaced with personal messages.
  • A bag full of little Bronco's memorabilia for my son who is a giant fan: rubber bracelets, book, lanyard, etc.
  • One year I was giving everyone pajama pants. I was able to easily find a pair for everyone with one of their interests/favorite colors/characters on them, except for one person. I think I googled something like 'music pajama pants', and came up with a pair that had an all-over keyboard pattern for the music lover. Not super easy to find but perfect for the recipient.
Some websites where I get great ideas and gifts:
And finally, for the really, really, really hard person to shop for, what about a donation to their favorite charity in honor of them? That's the gift that gives twice!

Share your favorite website for unique gifts in the comments or tell me about your favorite gift idea. See? I haven't even started my Christmas shopping yet and I need your ideas, too!!

Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all!

*sigh*

Once again the holidays are upon us. Hopefully your turkey is in the brine, the pies are made, and you have your to-the-minute oven schedule written and posted. (Just me? Kidding. I'm not even hosting this year.)

I read Melisa's post earlier and I wish I had her attitude about the holidays. Well, I'm better than I was, but not as relaxed as I feel like I should be. I feel so much pressure for everything to be 'perfect'. You know? It never is. When the kids were younger I wanted holidays here at my house so that I wouldn't have to travel with the babies but it made me a complete stress-ball. In what universe is cleaning the entire house, having house guests, and cooking most of a huge meal with toddlers under foot easier than showing up somewhere with a dish or two? Someone needed to slap me upside the head.

Note to young parents: Go if/where you are invited. Yes it's a hassle to pack all the baby crap but you won't have the stress of making sure that Aunt Betty has her favorite wine and the toilet is clean after the last potty training session. Learn from my mistakes, people.

We were on the way to the orthodontist this morning and listening to a talk radio station and the host was having people call in to share their best 'excuses' for getting out of the annual family argument. We were howling! The host suggested to walk in complaining of a toothache so that when the argument starts you can complain about the tooth and leave. A caller suggested bringing the Monsignor (or another respected member of the clergy or community,) so that everyone would be on their best behavior. Yet another even suggested just the opposite: bring a date that is tattooed, possibly drunk, or whatever might be offensive to your family so that in following years whoever you bring will look fantastic in comparison. We typically have Thanksgiving with my husband's family and to my knowledge have never had a family argument around the table. Can I get an "Amen!"?

I pray that your travels have been safe, that your family arguments are only discussions, your apple pie is as delicious as mine, and your wine glass is never empty!

Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all!

Vintage Belle

There has to be someone super difficult to buy for on your shopping list this holiday season. We all have them, right? Well, I don't know who you will buy one of these for, but you should work this Etsy shop into your list. I mean, just look at this stuff!!

American Folk Art Broken China Bracelet

Old Country Roses Broken China Ring

Broken China Spode Christmas Pendant
If I were shopping for myself I would have a hard time deciding on something but I bet I could decide on something for someone else pretty quick. Especially if they were a Spode collector! This shop also has earrings and pins in addition to the types of jewelery above. I just love looking at their collections. Since I'm not so crafty myself, I can't imagine the work that goes into each piece-especially how they break (or cut?) each piece of china into such tiny pieces. Amazing.

Vintage Belle Broken China Jewelery on Etsy (Link to the home page of the store.)

If you buy anything there, let me know? I'm dying to see a piece in person!

I have no relationship with Vintage Belle Jewelery. I stumbled across their Facebook page and fell in love with their stuff and thought you would too!

Black friday Done Right

My friend Carmen asked this question this morning on Facebook:

[A friend] got me to thinking - if you were to list one thing that makes your Black Friday perfect, what would it be? For me, it's actually two things - pumpkin pie for breakfast, and a turkey/stuffing/mashed potatoes/gravy/cranberry bowl of awesomeness for lunch. What about you? What makes your #blackfridaydoneright? It doesn't have to be food (shhh, you heathen) - it might be shopping or decorating or whatever.

Her thinking got me thinking. (That's dangerous, I know.) Our favorite way to spend the day after Thankgiving when I was a teen and in college was going to a movie, maybe out to dinner, maybe walking the mall a little. It was less about shopping, more about the movie and spending time together.

I'm not so much a Black Friday shopper. The deals sound great but I pretty much hate people and big crowds. So I don't do it.

I realized this morning that I have kind of dreaded the day after Thanksgiving for the last 16 years. Some years we have family in town and I feel it a little less but it's still there. For the first 5 years of our marriage HD would play golf early on the day after Thanksgiving. Now, the company that HD has worked for for the last 11 years isn't closed on the day after Thanksgiving so he always works. I understand why-he usually has big projects going on, it's a great, quiet day to get paperwork done, we're usually saving vacation days for Christmas time.

My ideal #blackfridaydoneright would be sleeping in, waking up in the arms of my sweetie, and spending the day together finishing the clean up, watching a little college football, listening to Christmas music, starting to get Christmas decorations out, and all hanging out together.

A girl can dream can't she?

Thankful and Blessed

On Monday as I was racing around the grocery store I got a text message. I was half tempted not to  read it since it seemed that I had hit the store at just the right moment when it wasn't a madhouse. I glanced down and saw that it was from my mother, so I slid the message open.

Hey, good news! No sign of cancer. Bad news, gallstones. Oh well. Nothing to do about that til there's a problem.
I dropped my phone and sobbed into my hands. No sign of cancer. Months of prayer, months of worry. No sign of cancer.

*****

I am so thankful for my dad beating this. For him staying strong and not giving up.
I am thankful for my mother, who is way more badass than she gives herself credit for. She has gotten through these last 11 months, rarely asking for help, and supporting my dad all the way. And with a grace that I'm not sure that she thinks she had.
I am thankful for my aunt, who in moving to Colorado, has brought new life into the home that they all share. Some of that life is four-foooted and furry, and it is good.
I am thankful for my daughter and her new husband being there and the new relationships that are forming, away from the relationships in the shadow of us, the parents. I am thankful for their faithfulness to God and how he is blessing them, abundantly, as they start their new life together.
I am thankful for my brother and his family who have been so supportive of our parents. And my nieces that bring  smiles to faces when they enter a room.

*****

I am thankful for my amazing husband. He works so hard for us and is so generous. I'm thankful that he loves me beyond measure, faults and all.
I am thankful for my #1 son. He is 14 today. He challenges me every day and I am a better human for those trials. He is musical and artistic and gentle and kind.
I am thankful for my #2 son. He makes me laugh and despite his stature is also gentle and kind.

*****

I am thankful for my husband's family. They have given me so much and stretched me to grow in places that I didn't know I needed growth. I'm thankful for the babies that we get to smooch on when we're together. Thankful for being able to guide nieces in some small way, sister-in-laws that welcome me in, and a brother-in-law that can be counted on.

*****

I am thankful for friends. Friends who, despite our busy schedules, can pick up right where we left off. Friends that open their homes to us. Friends that let me vent, knowing that I'm being irrational, and let me get it out anyway. Friends who I can let my guard down with. Friends who don't judge me for my foul mouth. Friends that know when a glass of wine isn't just a nice way to end the day, it's a necessity. Friends who trust me with the hard stuff. Friends who, despite the miles between us, answer text messages and will spill it to me by text so we remain relevant to each other. Friends who make coffee dates a priority, weekly. Friends that live in my computer yet still support me and my family every day.

And for you. You, the friends that come here, to read about my crazy yet average life. I am thankful for you too. Even the ones that don't often comment. Thank you for letting me tell my story to you.

*****

And last, but certainly not least, I am thankful for a God that sent his Son that we might have abundant life, beyond measure. Because without Jesus, none of this would be possible.

I wish for all of you to have such a full and happy and rich life. xoxo

Holiday Traditions

It's the little things that make the holiday, right? Every family ends up with their own traditions that make it unique. I know that in general, our Christmases look pretty similar to those of my family growing up. I do love the little things that we do that make it different, though. Like these:

  • Baking sugar cookies on Christmas Eve eve, then decorating them on Christmas Eve for Santa. Dude gets tons of cookies here.
  • Jingle bells on the front door and garage door handles. Drives HD CRAZY. But I love it that I can hear bells consistently, but not constantly, throughout the holidays.
  • My growing collection of Nativities. I have the Little People, Willow Tree, a heart set, a small 2 piece set, and now 2 from Malawi. Well, HG gets one of those but for now they are both in the front hall.
  • My Christmas dishes. They will probably stay in the cupboard this year unless I get really productive this weekend. They are pretty, green trees with pink accents. Different than the Spode pattern that everyone and their brother has.
  • Candied Pecans. My mother started this so I guess it's not new, really, but all of my local friends and their husbands start bugging me for them about this time of year.
What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

Thanksgiving Eve

Prep is winding down around here. Cranberries are done. Eggs have been boiled. Breakfast casserole is in the fridge for a morning bake. Potatoes are washed. We'll have 14 for dinner tomorrow. Most everything just has to be put together and baked or crockpotted. I even have more than enough serving dishes.

This year we have so so so much to be thankful for. This year, I'm giving thanks for:
  • My husband and his great job with a great company, in an industry that, while not recession proof, is certainly resilient in these uncertain times. And, he is an amazing husband and father.
  • My daughter, who will finish college in a few short weeks, has a great job of her own; who is willing to help; who is the definition of a God-filled young woman.
  • My son, #1, who is discovering who he is through music and has a knack for things computer-related and online. He is a consientious student and a compassionate young man.
  • My son, #2, who is both a young man and child. His infectious giggle makes me smile, as does his need to be touched, snuggled, every day.
  • My parents, who, without them we couldn't be who or where we are today. They are helpful, fun, and generous, and two of the best friends I've ever had.
  • Our extended family-our brothers and sisters, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles. What an amazing group of people we get to call family and travel this life with. While some we see more than others, there are none that are ever far from our thoughts.
  • Our community of friends. Community is the family that we choose, and how incredibly lucky that the community we have surrounded ourselves with are some top-notch human beings. Including the W family, the two R families, and my friend Debby. I couldn't do it with out them around me every day.
  • My community of online friends. These are the (mostly) women who support me every day, from afar, and never tell me I'm doing it wrong, even when I am. I can only hope that my support of them means as much as theirs does to me.
  • Most importantly, I'm thankful for a merciful God, who forgives us, and for his son Jesus who died for us-you and me-so we could be here, at this place in time, and be a witness to his grace and for his grace. It's the greatest gift of all.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Much love, from my house to yours!

Three

Yes, that is the number of times that I've posted before today, in December. I'm still highly unmotivated to write right now, but I know that if I don't "just do it" that I'll never post again, so here I am.

Christmas was lovely around here, and I'm not just talking about the weather. (Which, by the way is sunny and in the 70's. Don't be hatin'.) My parents were here for 10 days beginning on the 18th, which gave us plenty of time to get things done and have some fun, too. HD and my dad got to play golf before Christmas, we had a great Christmas Eve dinner with my BIL and SIL, and I was even done with all of my shopping by 2 days before Christmas. Amazing!

Christmas morning was nice... we didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn! We opened our stockings and found that Santa had brought a new iMac. (Thank goodness! Now Mama has her laptop back!) The boys got some great gifts that they were excited about: Skyrim for XBOX, new sweatshirt jackets, gift cards and money, among other things. HG got various travel goodies, including money for another summer in Africa. HD was the recipient of almost everything that he asked for in the way of clothes, etc., but I think his favorite gifts were the 2 books on the history and windows of St. Patricks' Cathedral in New York City. (The reason for the books is another post entirely. It's a great story.) I had a really great Christmas. HD employed a friend to help him find a zoom lens for my Canon that I have been desperate for, and threw in the bag and tripod for good measure. I've started playing with it, but I now can't wait to head to a local shop with a friend to take some lessons to really learn how to use it properly. Think I'll be able to get a good picture of the kids now? I sure hope so! I also got a new battery for my laptop, a pair of Broncos plaid flannel pj pants, a couple of sweaters, and a jewelery tree for my bathroom that I've needed forever.

The day after Christmas we went to see Hugo, my first movie in over a year. We all loved it, and if you haven't seen it yet you should before it is out of theaters. Then? Head right to the bookstore to treat yourself to the book. It is typically in the children's section but adults will also be mesmerized. I loved it when I read it a few years ago and now can't wait until I can pick it up again as well as read another book by the same author. I'd bet you'll want to dive into them, too.

I guess that my only disappointment of the season was that I didn't get to do my usual baking. Time just kept getting away from me and that's what had to go. I'm in luck though. My kids don't go back to school until January 9th, so maybe we can get a few things done next week and they can take treats to their teachers then!

That's all for today. Missed you guys. So tell me. How was your holiday?

Behind

And thus begins the portion of the show where I freak the heck out.

I've got 3 tons of stuff to do and less than a ton of time to do it.

Please, if I'm missing something major in your life or on your blog direct me to it. Know that it's not you, it's me. I'm going to spend the next several days offline (except for shopping!,) and try to get caught up.

Do you have any tips for me for getting caught up? Right now I need a clock that goes back in time!

Saturday Shots-Decorating Edition

The family room complete with tree, stockings, Little People Nativity, and Black Ops. You know, because it's such a great family activity.

Not complete, but my Santas on the left,  my Willow Tree Nativity in the middle, and my snowmen on the right. And a random easel, just for giggles.
More snowmen on the left of the staircase, another Santa at the top, and my penguins down the right.
Tree placement in living room. Complete with ornament boxes just to keep it real.
So that's as far as I've gotten. Looking at the pictures I see a ton of fixes. *Sigh* It's never done, is it?

Decorating

Last year we had a crappy Christmas. Well, it just didn't much feel like any sort of holiday since our house was torn up after our flood and I couldn't decorate. Do you remember the sad little tree that I put up in our family room?

Well, you'll be happy to know that I decorated today. All of the stockings are hung by the chimney with care. The sad little tree is up in the family room and it isn't quite so sad this year. The only thing that isn't done yet are actual ornaments on the trees. Tomorrow and Sunday. Not kidding.

I had fun decorating this year. I did some things differently than I usually do which makes it fun for me. I actually cleaned off an entire table in my front hall and have a nativity on it with 2 other of my 'Christmas collections'. I think I'll take pictures tomorrow so you can see some of what I've done. And yes, Liz, I'll show you where I put the tree!

Confession: I still haven't found homes for a few of the boxes that you saw in the last picture of my progress. Honest to pete I cannot seem to get rid of them. They are full of random stuff. Old pictures, a map of London from our trip there in 1999, some old business files.  Certainly if I would just go through them I could at least combine them into one, right? Anyhow, that's what I'm up against.

Viva Saturday!
