Funny Foto Friday (Not!)

Funny that my boys share a room. Funny that they decided that they don't want to share anymore. (Or not.)
Mom came up with a brilliant idea. (That would be me.) Clean the room and rearrange the furniture so each boy has some space of his own. On my own. (Really. All by myself.)(Not funny either.)
Funny that this was 3 weeks ago and there has been little progress since these pictures were taken. Well, the furniture has been positioned. Countless bags of crap stuff has been thrown out. I even sent some of the clutter on!

Still left to be done: take down all pictures, fill nail holes, paint over said nail holes, re-hang all pictures. Move furniture again and vacuum under/around all. (That's since we finally got the vacuum fixed. That was decidedly NOT funny.) Find places for all the crap stuff that wasn't eliminated.

Funny that we are now scrambling to get the downstairs clean and ready for a house full for the game on Sunday, as well as grocery shop for the yummy food. Funny that I'm not spending my time on finishing that room so I can move on to other rooms in the house that desperately need the attention.

Come to think of it? It's not funny at all.

Go check out more, you know, actually funny pictures at Anne's place!

PS-Don't forget! We're on the last day of my giveaway and even if you've already entered once you can enter again today. Great stuff, baby!

PPS-I actually like that last photo. It's really cool the way the sun in coming in the room. I don't, however, like the way that all I can really see is DISASTER AREA!

PPPS-I swear I won't use the ps thing often. It's her schtick.

Learning To Get In The Way

So many times we tell our children to be quiet, slow down, to stay out of the way. The joy of football is that we get to do just the opposite. Flag football seems to be the perfect introduction to really learning how to get in the way. In the right way. "GET IN THE WAY!" Is our new mantra on sports days. HB#2 even got to run the ball on this cloudy, perfect-for-football-weather Sunday, and gained 5 yards. Guess they weren't expecting the center to get the ball? Whatever. At least he's playing. And loving every minute. Watch out tackle-league, here comes the Headless Boy that will GET IN THE WAY.

So is Mama.

BTW-my kid is the biggest kid in the picture. Well, actually, the whole league for his age group.

Eternal Truth

Not only am I behind on most of my life, but I just found a magazine that I bought in December. It was buried on a chair under a few coats that I haven't worn all month. A Women's Health that promises a flat belly in 2 weeks.

I'm already working on that. Ahem.

Anyway, I found the coolest thing on the very last page and wanted to share it with you all. These are truly eternal truths. (Huh?) Don't we all try to teach our kids this stuff?

8 Eternal Truths We Can Learn From Tykes:

  1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Even when there isn't a prize in the box.
  2. Your world can be half-real and half-imaginary. (Blogging anyone?)
  3. If there's even the slightest doubt, hit the potty before you leave.
  4. Homework blows. Bring work home with you and it'll ruin your night. And your marriage.
  5. There's a reason they don't give credit cards to 8-year-olds. You're supposed to save up for a new toy.
  6. The coolest adults are the ones who listen.
  7. Adrenaline is the greatest drug.
  8. Rain isn't something to curse but to enjoy. Hurry up before it clears.

Schedule (Or If I Don't Have One Soon I May Loose My Mind!)

In attempting to wrangle the headlessness, I'm trying to come up with a workable schedule for myself. Putting out fires is just not working. (Hello, worst strategy in the world.)

In the very near future I will have 2 boys in 4 sports total. (Disclaimer: I have never allowed this to happen before, and don't necessarily agree with it, but that is a post for another day, and I was the one that let it happen.) This is in addition to all of the other stuff that we do on a weekly basis. I'm thinking that if I don't plan ahead I will drown in the first week.

I need your help. Please comment with your schedule, your best hints for time management, your blog posts on the subject, links to ideas that might help. Do you use a spreadsheet? The list method? Do you schedule everything? Or just the Must-Do stuff? Do you schedule things by the minute? Hour? Morning/afternoon/evening? Week?

How often do you meal plan/grocery shop? And on what day? What do you prepare ahead?

How much time do you allow/give yourself for blogging (reading and writing)/other social media? Do you schedule it or do you fit it in between other things? How do you stay away from it when it's not 'on the schedule'? (This has become a major issue for me. I admit it. I own it.)

How much do you require out of your family/spouse/kids? Do they have daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities? Do you ask for help or do they just do their thing?

I know that this is a lot of questions but if I'm going to make this work for the long haul (or at least until June!) I need to gather all of the information that I can.

In the coming weeks, in addition to implementing them here at home, I'll be sharing the best ideas and giving credit where credit is due. I've already found a couple of links that I'll be sharing when I begin.

Let me have it!

So, can I count on your help?

PS- Don't forget to enter my giveaway-you can enter once a day between now and Friday!

PPS-Head back to Shannons for more WFMW posts!

200

Carmen has got me going on another fitness challenge.

200 sit ups.

This one actually seems a little easy for me. Or at least I'm encouraged with how I'm starting. If you clicked over you saw that you are to take an initial test to see your starting level. I'm starting at 50.

If you have over 30 they suggest that you skip to week 3.

See? That's encouraging! A six week program and I've only got 4 to go! Whoot!

Want to join us/me? We'll be posting our updates every Friday over at the ELFF Diet, and sometimes I'll post mine here. Hopefully I'll keep up with this one since I quit the last one. Well, maybe I'll start that again too. We'll see.

Wish me luck!

A New Twist on the Familliar

Has a recipe ever been so obvious that you didn't try it?

Here's the deal: I make the same spaghetti sauce that my mom did. Loved it then, love it now. It is the recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook-you know, the red and white checked one? (Side note: if you don't have one put it on your birthday list or Christmas list. Totally worth it.) I've made this a hundred times if I've made it once, and very rarely do I vary the recipe.

Today I noticed that there was a variation listed underneath. Spaghetti with meatballs. Go figure.

HD has been asking for it for months and since I had all most of the ingredients on hand I decided to surprise him.

Yummy! Everyone loved it, well, except for the picky one who shall remain unnamed. He had plain noodles. Killjoy.

And the meatballs were really easy, if a little time consuming. I may not do it for a regular weekday meal but these were perfect for a day when you have a little more time to spend.

Sauce recipe here. Ok, it's super, super close to mine. Not exact. I couldn't find the meatballs on line. Go figure. Let me know if you want it and I'll write it out, K? Enjoy!

Another One Bites The Dust

Most of you know of my love of the red wine. Equal is the love of my red wine glasses. Otherwise I would have to drink it out of the bottle, and that's just not right. 23 oz. balloon goblets from Crate and Barrel, circa 1997. We got a whole dozen of these babies for our wedding-they matched the dozen champagne, white wine and brandy glasses that we also received. Of course when we got them they weren't BROKEN!

Over the years I've broken 9 of them. This one on December 15th. *sigh*

Crate and Barrel, as far as I can find, does not sell these any more. I'm getting desperate.

And very careful.

Click for Clutter-1

If you haven't heard of Darryle's new blog yet you should hop ye right on over. (Well, after reading me, of course!) She is the author of the blog i never signed up for this, and her newest, Click for Clutter. The premise is that as she is cleaning out her clutter, she finds an interesting stash of items, tells their story, and you get to vote on whether they stay or go, to charity or to you! A couple of weeks ago she had this darling set of elephant linens-I said they should come to live here at the Headless household...and apparently she agreed!

They arrived today and I love them. The green is beautiful-it is just the shade that I have all over my house. Crazy, huh?

I really love the idea of giving my good used stuff to someone out there who can really use and/or appreciate it. So, from time to time I will be offering things here to you, my bloggy peeps. I promise that they are offered in good faith, and I won't offer anything that I really think is trash. K? (I asked Darryle for permission to use this idea here.)

For my inaugural click for clutter post I am just telling you what I've done. Cheating? Maybe, but I couldn't resist passing this along to my pal Amy at doubleh-vay for her darling boys, Finnean and Blaise. My boys hardly used it-ever!- and since they can be pricey I'd rather pass them along to them than donate them, or collect $2.50 for them in a garage sale sometime in 2011 after collecting dust in my garage for the next two years. So, here you go, Amy! Love you to bunches-I hope your little men love it.

Next time you'll get to comment on the item/items, I'll pick a winner (method to be determined depending on the number of commenters), and I'll send the stuff to your house!

Holla friends! A few quick notes on this Where-is-Winter-Friday: (Because, OH, how I love the list!)

  • As a warning, due to craptastic service from our cable/phone/internet provider and the angry seeping out of Headless Dad's pores there may be a sudden black hole here. That's right, HD is threatening them with cancellation unless they fix something. Believe me, if it happens I'll be all over the internet (from Starbucks, of course,) letting them have it, but in the meantime say a little prayer that they make it right so I don't have to go through withdrawl. Or, you know, have to actually get dressed to use the internet.
  • KELLY'S BIRTHDAY IS TOMORROW! Go forth and leave her some comments-flood her inbox-show her some 40TH BIRTHDAY LOVE!
  • Thanks to all of you who came out of your internet closet to say Hi on Delurker Day. However, I know that there are more of you, so how about today?
  • As many of you know, I'm now on Facebook. Since I don't use our names here, (it would defeat the purpose of the 'headless', you know), if you're interested in 'friending' me there, and I can trust you with our anonynimity, just shoot me an email with your full name and we'll get right on that. Well, if I can stop playing Pathwords long enough to check email. I have found, or been found by so many old friends, classmates, sorority sisters, family, and old co-workers that my mind is truly boggled, I tell you. All of the worlds are colliding, my friend. (*waves to all my old/new peeps*)
  • I get a big FAIL this week for not participating in Anne Glamour's Flashback Friday, but you can still reap the benefits. Go, read, and follow the links to the others that didn't fail. The theme this week is Red, White, and Blue. Other themes can be found here. Participate! I'll be over to check them out later. It is a great way to find topics for those of us that have the dreaded Blogger's Block. Oh, wait, I can participate with an old post you can find here. Kind of a lame attempt, but I'll do better next week. That is if I still have internet.
See ya, Chickas!

Lemons out of Lemonade...Oh Wait...

Last week while stumbling around I found that I had been awarded this:

It comes by way of Baseball Mom, who writes the cutest blog-gives me a glimpse into my future! So go check her out, k? The link to the post with the award is here.

Copied from her site:

This award comes with a few rules: Put the logo on your blog or post. Nominate at least 10 blogs which show GREAT ATTITUDE and/or GRATITUDE! Be sure to link to your nominees within your post. Let them know that they have received this award by commenting on their blog. Share the love and link to this post and to the person from whom you received your award.

Thanks! Before I make my list I would like to say here, (like I said over there), that I don't think I've had much of a great attitude lately. Thankfully, I suppose, it hasn't come out much in my writing. I hope that will get even better in the coming weeks, because, holy cow, it is going to be even more headless around here than ever.

Now, on to my list!

  • Natalie from Tell Me About It- for her graceful transition to life back in the States.
  • The Mom from I'm OK, You're OK-because raising 2 girls alone is not easy.
  • Soliloquy from She Just Had To Say It- because I laugh every time she puts fingers to keyboard.
  • Michelle from Sparks and Butterflies, and Red of Ramblings of a Red-Headed Step-Child- because they're putting their families first.
  • Tracey from Grace Comes By Hearing- for sharing her journey to motherhood with us.
  • Marcy from The Glamorous Life- All I have to say here is AdTalk and FunnyFoto.
  • A. From Rocks in the Wash- for being a great, long time friend (and feeding my Facebook addiction. Gah!)
  • Steph from Serenity Now!- because every time I read her tag line I laugh...and then say "YES! Someone gets it!"
  • Kelly from Something Funny Happened Today- for many reasons (if you read here often you know that we are old friends,) but most importantly because her birthday is on Saturday and SHE'LL BE 40! So don't forget to stalk her for a couple of days, leave her a few comments, and don't let her forget it! (heehee. Hi Kelly! *waves* )
So. There you have it. If I have linked to you would you mind leaving the link to your pass-it-on-post here in my comments so we can see who else gets this great award? Thanks!

Football! (Like we haven't had enough of it this season.)

I was hoping to have photographic evidence to share, but maybe next week.

I am now officially a football mom.

HB2 started practice in a flag football league last Saturday, had practice on Thursday, and today was to be their first game. Well, no game today because of the tremendous winds that we've been having, but the kids had practice anyway.

He is so excited about all of it. He loves the jersey and the mouthpiece. He loves his new cleats. He actually wants to practice-even at home. (I see afternoons of being chased in the yard in my future!) He really loves it!

(Well, maybe not everything. After the first practice his legs were sore for about 3 days. The whining, OH MY LORD the whining!)

I'm feeling melancholy about this. On the one hand-YaHoo! I now have my very own football player. I can look forward to many a Saturday afternoon hollering for someone to "HIT HIM!" (This already describes my Sundays during NFL season, Saturdays during NCAA season, the 2 weeks after Christmas.....) Although this also means 2 weeks of 2-a-days in August, and practices 5 days a week throughout the season. *sigh* I guess there is always a downside?

The other reason that I'm a little melancholy about it is that OH MY GOSH I HAVE A KID OLD ENOUGH TO PLAY TACKLE FOOTBALL. And, since he is the youngest of the three, I really have to put the illusion away that I have young children. They (the younger 2 anyway) are just boys now.

Mostly though, I am really glad that HB2 has decided on football. Yes, partly because it is my favorite sport; I won't lie. But it is the one thing that he has chosen without following his older brother-his first assertion of independence, if you will. Although he has loved baseball, and probably still will, he is really looking forward to the physicality of football. (And for those of you that know him this is amazing-he is my couch potato kid!)

*****

On that note, I must will announce that I won the final week of the Blogger's Football League! The competition was stiff-it came down to the tiebreaker points between 3 of us. I really had fun this year and look forward to stomping the competition next season! Thanks to Amy in Ohio and Instamom for making it happen each week with Mr. Linky and a rockin' spreadsheet. (I guess I'll let it slide that I didn't get a winner's badge for the final week.) Want to join us? We'll announce the beginning of the season a week or 2 before we begin. See you in August!

Photobucket

(Acutally, BFL will be back in August. I'll hopefully be back with another titillating post tomorrow. Aren't you excited?)

Dear (HB 1),

Lately you have delighted in hearing the story of when I found out I was pregnant with you. You love to hear that your dad, sister and I were in London-and have even asked if that counts that you were there, too! We were so happy to know that you would soon be a part of our family.

You were born on Thanksgiving weekend in 1999, and what a big boy you were! You were very tall-21 1/2 inches, and a whopping 9.5 lb. Arnie and Captain brought (HG) over right away to see you-you rewarded them by scratching yourself on the face so bad that there was even blood. As a baby you didn’t like to sleep much, and not much has changed.

You have always had a compassionate heart-the first to make sure that if someone was hurt that they were OK, the first to pray for someone to be healed, the first to hug someone who was crying. That is a gift; it cannot be learned. I also think that you are the most kind person that I know. I am proud that you are a hard worker at school, and that you try hard at everything that you attempt. I’m looking forward to watching you grow and develop, and to see what God has in store for your future.

You have always been a delight, (HB1).

We love you very much!

Love,
Mom and Dad

Home Run

I have hit a home run on dinners this week-and completely by accident!

Monday I was trying to decide what to have and remembered that I had bought a head of lettuce that I hadn't used yet. Then I remembered that I had a bunch of frozen ground turkey. The search for lettuce wraps was on!

I settled on this recipe after reading the comments and all of the variations that were suggested. It was really quick and easy-assuming you have all of the ingredients on hand-30 minutes tops!

A couple of changes that I made:

  • Ground turkey
  • No ginger (blech!)
  • Thai sweet chili sauce instead of hot sauce
  • Doubled the sauce. Ground Turkey can be dry when cooked.
  • But don't make extra sauce. It's really not needed.
  • I also grated some carrots to add for the extra crunch and vitamins.
Seriously? My entire family LOVED these-kids AND Headless Dad. (If you are watching the sodium keep an eye on the sauces-the sodium level can get out of hand so you might want to watch for low sodium versions.) I also made egg drop soup as a little extra and it was also a hit. (That was from a dry mix packet that I found while gathering the sauces at the store. Easy! And only 30 calories-really!- per serving. Cha-ching!)

Tuesday I made a corned beef roast that I had picked up at Costco, with potatoes and cabbage. Headless Dad loves this and, surprisingly, over the years I have come to enjoy it, also. HG, not so much, but she did eat it, and so did the boys. It is also easy: boil for an hour per pound, add the veggies an hour before serving. Voila!

Tonight I pulled out one of my old, easy standards. I usually have some kind of fixin's for salad around, and I've been craving Mexican lately, so...TACO SALAD! Seasoned ground beef, lots of mixed greens, tomatoes, red onion, radishes, celery. The best part is the dressing: Lite Sour cream mixed with your favorite salsa, roughly half and half. Most of us like to crumble tortilla chips on top as well. Again, easy and yummy.

The best part of Monday and Wednesday's meals is that they are super low calorie and low fat!

And Shannan? You could do each one of these-easy!!! I promise!

(P.S. Thanks to those of you that left suggestions for me on the last post. I can't wait to get started now!)

Hi blogger's block. Familiar friend lately.

Help me peeps.

Kathy gave me a couple of ideas in the comments of the last post.

Kelly gave me a shudder.

What about you? Gimmie a word. Anything.

Would it help if you thought I was on my knees begging?

Oh, and the time to blog as well as clean my house and cook for my family would help, too. Can you help out with that also?

'Preciate it. Thanks!

How Hard Do I Have To Try?

(I actually know the answer. Indulge me, won't you?)

How hard do I have to try to help you two get your homework done?

How many tears will you shed until you get that it just has to get done?

How many breaks do you need?

How many times will you get distracted? (Like that's even a valid excuse...)

How many snacks will satisfy you? Drinks of water?

How many times will I have to walk away to gather my thoughts?

How many times do I have to bite my tongue to stop myself from saying what I really want to, but know will only make things worse?

How many weeks, (months, or years) will it take before you can do it without me sitting with you? Nagging?

And then, how long will it take for me to forget these things and long for these days? Long for you wanting me near? Wishing you wanted my help and advice?

How long?

Out With The Old..

I think I've started this post a thousand times (OK, maybe only a hundred,) and then stopped.

Who really wants to hear about my Christmas? Yeah, that one where I've been cranky and all 'Bah Humbug"-ish. (And thanks to Headless Dad, acutely aware of how bitchy I've been, thankyouverymuch. That helped!) (I hope the sarcasm was not lost in the translation.)

Things that have happened include, but are not limited to:

  • a bloggy friend losing her dad.
  • a irl friend telling me that her husband has cancer.
  • another irl friend being hospitalized.
  • sitting in my house for 3 days waiting on the new tv to be hooked up properly instead of being out shopping.
  • my dad being sick, and me being 1,000 miles away and not able to help my mom.
  • discovering PathWords on Facebook.
  • me being 100% paralyzed-well, at least as far as writing goes. (Hi BlogHer Ads! I'm back!)
I haven't even managed to grocery shop-well, unless the Christmas eve trip that I got everything I needed in 45 minutes then waited in line for 30, but I'm really trying to forget that one, ok? Oh, and the Costco trip yesterday that really only yielded a bunch of meat for the freezer, toilet paper, and paper towels. Yay. (That is a victory in itself. Do you know why?)

So, in the spirit of the new year, I am sharing my goal for the year.

No, I'm not vowing to lose more weight. Although, that would be great. I'm going to stay the course on that one-exercise when I can, eat well. Maintain, lose if I can. Simple. I made being healthier the priority the last 2 years and it has become a part of me, who I am, what I do. I'm proud of that, but it's not the new thing any more.

My goal for the year is to spend the first part of my day-5 minutes minimum-reading my Bible.

This will take care of a plethora of problems. First, giving your day to God is the best way to get through it, no matter what this life and this world can throw at you. Second, I have a lot to learn. Third, I have a lot to share with all of you, and being well read will hopefully make my little observations more rich-the only kind of rich that matters.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-3

And, it should also take care of that little problem that Headless Dad so delicately pointed out. Don't you think?
